John

B. John D'Auria

Welcome...

Thanks for visiting my home page. This photo was taken a few years ago, so just add a distinguishing dash of white at the temples and it'll be current. So what does the "B." at the beginning of my name stand for? Well, my father's Sicilian family wanted to name me after his father - "Santo" - but my mother's Southern Italian/Irish family wouldn't have it (thank goodness). So they compromised with the Scottish name "Bruce".  I, however, stopped using it many years ago when I was teaching English and realized "John" was easier for speakers of foreign languages.

And now, an introduction...

Film Festival

Hamming it up with some friends at last year's Miami Film Festival.
(How did this photo get next to the Professional section?)

Professional...

Here's a short career synopsis, starting with the present:

  • Currently a Systems Analyst in the Finance Dept. of Miami-Dade County; support networks, develop applications and assist end users (2 years).
  • Manager of an employee training program; taught Miami-Dade employees how to use their PCs (10 years).
  • Project Engineer for a health maintenance organization; workflow and productivity analysis (2 years).
  • Manager of an offset lithography print shop (2 years, but because it was in New Jersey it seemed a lot longer).
  • Teacher of English as a Foreign Language at four universities, including the University of Panama (total 6 years).

(Pop Quiz: Am I a people-person with technical skills, or a techie-nerd with people skills? Answer: Yes.)

I have a B.A. and M.Ed. from S.U.N.Y. at Buffalo, and an M.B.A. (in Management Information Systems) from Florida International University. My Spanish and Italian are rusty but intelligible.

Personal...

I was born (1952) and raised in Buffalo, NY (which doesn't deserve the bad publicity it gets). From 1970 to 1985 I lived, studied and worked in Ohio, Italy, Panama, New York City and New Jersey. In 1985 I moved to Miami, where I have lived ever since. Miami has treated me well, but don't spread that around because we already have too many people here.

  • Single, never married, no children.
  • On a good day I'm 5'8" 175 lbs.; recently ran a 5K in 24:30.
  • Don't smoke, do drink socially, and prefer to eat healthy.
  • Raised a liberal Democrat, but now I don't care what party candidates belong to as long as their answers work.
  • Raised Catholic, but don't practice.
  • Tend to like foreign films (Cinema Paradiso, et al.).
  • Sports: Soccer, swimming, sailing, diving; love the outdoors.
  • Music: Pat Metheny, Take Six, jazz, guitar, percussion, voice.
  • Dance: Yes, especially Salsa!
  • President of an investment club.
  • Interpersonally speaking, I value honesty and a sense of humor above all other qualities.

Family My mother (a.k.a. "Ma", on the right) lives in Buffalo; my older sister (center) recently passed away; and my younger sister (top) is Marketing Director for a prestigious hotel in Wash., D.C. Also in the picture is a close friend of the family (left), and the younger sister's daughter (being held).

All three siblings started out in theatrical arts, and then progressed to education and business. I have family in Miami, but my extended family is still based in Buffalo. Every year we gather there for a family reunion; this year we were about 90 people. If you'd like to see what the clan looks like, visit the site I set up for The Lucchino Family.
